I believe that part of what propels science is the thirst for wonder. Its a very powerful emotion. All children feel it. In a first grade classroom everybody feels it; in a twelfth grade classroom almost nobody feels it, or at least acknowledges it. Something happens between first and twelfth grade, and its not just puberty. Not only do the schools and the media not teach much skepticism, there is also little encouragement of this stirring sense of wonder. Science and pseudoscience both arouse that feeling. One of the major difficulties Trillian experienced in her relationship with Zaphod was learning to distinguish between him pretending to be stupid just to get people off their guard, pretending to be stupid because he couldnt be bothered to think and wanted someone else to do it for him, pretending to be so outrageously stupid to hide the fact that he actually didnt understand what was going on, and really being genuinely stupid.
